Landlords as a class/job shouldn’t exist. People should control the living spaces they occupy; a parasitic rentier class shouldn’t dictate how we live the most intimate part of our lives. The only reason landlords are “necessary” under capitalism is because most people don’t own their own housing and have no choice but to pay rent beneath landlords. We have more than enough space for housing for everyone; just build houses for human need and allow people to control the spaces they use – none of this absentee ownership crap.
Yesterday, the people of Ireland elected Leo Varadkar to be the head of the governing Fine Gael party and therefore be the next prime minister.
This means Varadkar will be the first openly gay prime minister of Ireland, in addition to being the youngest person ever to hold this office.
“If my election today shows anything, it is that prejudice has no hold in this Republic,” Varadkar said to huge applause in a speech at Dublin’s Mansion House, where Ireland’s parliament first sat almost a century ago.
“I know when my father traveled 5,000 miles to build a new home in Ireland, I doubt that he ever dreamed that one day his son would grow up to be its leader and despite his differences, his son would be judged by his actions, not his identity.
“Every proud parent in Ireland today can dream big dreams for their children,” Varadkar said.
His election marks another chapter in the social change that has swept through the country of 4.6 million people that only decriminalized homosexuality in 1993 but became the first country to adopt gay marriage via a popular vote in 2015.
The province of Ontario, Canada is reportedly considering introducing birth certificates with a nonbinary option. The details are a little unclear, but it seems as though this would happen if nonbinary adults specifically requested a birth certificate with a nonbinary gender marker.
Ontario already allows gender-neutral driver’s licenses and health cards. The decision will likely come down to whether gender-neutral birth certificates would be recognized in other jurisdictions.
The minister’s statement comes after an Ontario-born filmmaker and activist pushed the province to recognize non-binary people in all government documentation.
Ferguson does not identify as male or female, and earlier this month they applied to have the sex designation on their birth certificate changed from male to non-binary.
Ferguson told BuzzFeed Canada that they have not yet received a response from the government, and that having a non-binary option on Ontario birth certificates by 2018 is “not good enough.”
“I have a right to my birth certificate in the same time period as every other Canadian — within six weeks from my submission of the application,” they said in an email. “My gender identity and gender expression are covered under Ontario law. I have a right to receive my non-binary birth certificate now, not next year.”
Whoa! Excited to see how this turns out – this could be huge.
I won’t speak for all liberals, but I’d like to see a future where it isn’t a big deal for a woman in full modesty garb to sit next to a drag queen in NYC. It’s become a bit of a sensation, but her and I were just existing. The freedom to simply be yourself in a sea of people who aren’t like you is a freedom we all deserve.
The central irony is that this isn’t some hypothetical future–it’s just present day reality. This is a picture of two ordinary people going about their normal lives despite how haters want to politicize it lmao. So the underlying message is not “future liberals want” it’s “people conservatives want to eradicate”
