States across the nation pass laws that direct prohibit you from buying cars directly from manufacturers, basically mandating car dealerships.  I literally just saw someone acknowledge this, then blame the free market anyways

Yeah, car dealerships are really, really unexpectedly powerful when it comes to political influence. Along with getting a lot of restrictive state and local regulations to protect themselves, they also made an incredibly strong (and ultimately successful) push against auto finance during the debate over Dodd-Frank, which is why they’re now some of the least regulated financial institutions

I always wondered why the existed they always seemed like useless middlemen
