The pyrrhuloxia or desert cardinal (Cardinalis sinuatus) is a medium-sized North American song bird found in the American southwest and northern Mexico.

Its name of pyrrhuloxia – once part of its scientific name – comes from Greek terms describing its coloration (pyrrhos = reddish or orange) and the shape of its bill (loxos = oblique). The common name, desert cardinal, refers to it inhabiting the southwest, and often arid regions, of the North American continent.

Do you think that after such vocal complaints from what may be a majority of this website’s userbase, tumblr may reconsider employing their banhammer?? I found it funny at first but now I’m worried that a website where I find comfort and a space of my own has started to flag posts as inappropriate almost At Random : ( I was still gonna be here if the porn is forced out but I can’t stand the idea of posts being deleted arbitrarily

  • some people are hoping that the outrage will make Tumblr change their decision… personally I doubt that for a lot of reasons (ad money, public image, getting the app back etc… and I also think fandom culture was dying a slow death on tumblr anyway) but you’re more knowledgeable than me… whats your opinion? the migration is inevitable?

I highly doubt tumblr is going to change their course just because a chunk of their userbase is pissed. the reason is simple:

we’re not tumblr’s clients.

people paying tumblr for advertising space are tumblr’s clients. the verizon stockholders are tumblr’s clients. we – the tumblr userbase – are the product for sale. We’re the potential clientele that advertisers hope to capture.

now if the advertisers get nervous about a mass exodus and demand that tumblr find a way to keep the users happy so they don’t lose the eyes on their ads, we might have a chance. but I not only doubt this will happen: I would guess that Oath is courting potential advertisers who don’t want their content to be associated with a nsfw-friendly social media site.

add a dash of FOSTA/SESTA – which states that the administrators of tumblr can be held legally responsible for the real actual cp on their servers – and there’s lots of incentive to go adult-content-free from a financial & legal standpoint. (or so it appears at the moment. from a CEO-level perspective.)

when in doubt: follow the money. always follow the money.

Just a reminder that federated, user-run social networks like Mastodon won’t leave you out to dry like tumblr’s about to. You’ll always be able to find an instance with rules you like – one that allows explicit content, bans Nazis and TERFs, etc. And if you don’t, you can MAKE one with rules you like. And you’ll still be able to interact with the larger fediverse no matter where you are

I’m going to start investigating ways to post more of my content on the fediverse and slowly start easing away from tumblr in hopes that this place finally dies. Follow me @socalledunitedstates@sunbeam.city

Mastodon(ɔ): It won’t fuck you over!

@socalledunitedstates Thanks for the info. Perhaps you can post some more about Mastodon for those who are unfamiliar like me. I just watched the about video on their website. How do you prevent the community from becoming too fragmented?

Mastodon uses the ActivityPub standard, meaning that each toot (post) has a predictable format and means of interface, and so you can see toots and follow users from other instances as if they’re your own. You can also block users on other instances, and your moderation team can silence entire instances if they get toxic

What’s even better is that Mastodon isn’t the only site that uses ActivityPub. Pleroma, Friendica, Hubzilla, Diaspora, write.as, and even the video sharing site Peertube and the audio site FunkWhale, among a growing list of others, can all interact with Mastodon in the exact same way that Mastodon interacts with itself. Far from being fragmented, the fediverse is more interconnected than anything else online!

Cool Cool. Any tips on getting started with Mastodon? How do we follow folks with weird interests?

It works just like Twitter – you can look through hashtags to see who’s posting about what. Most people make a post with the hashtag #introductions and then put up a bunch of tags to attract followers, so that’s a good way to make friends with people

Edit: What instance you join doesn’t matter much since they all talk, and switching instances is common and almost expected. There are lots of general instances though. I wouldn’t recommend joining mastodon.social since it’s the most popular by far and putting everyone on one instance kinda defeats the purpose. octodon.social is one general one that I’ve seen some good folks on

I know octodon.social is closed right now to new members, but there are many other general instances such as mastodon.xyz and mastodon.host. I’m pretty sure if you got to joinmastodon.com it gives you a list of some of the more popular instances to choose from. Also it’s pretty common for users to join mastodon under one of these general instances and once they’ve found their place in the community they’ll join a more specialised instance.

The real question is how horny are you allowed to be on mastodon?

hornt tooting is pretty much an expected occurrence on some instances tbh

Now this is interesting

Article: https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/a3mjxg/apple-tumblr-porn-nsfw-adult-content-banned

YES!! I LIKE THIS TAKE!!

Basically, because I know Mobile is bad with links, the article points out hat the broad, “sfw only, no titties allowed” wave on the internet in recent years is largely due to Apple’s absolute stranglehold on the App Store. Apple has strict guidelines about NSFW content that choke creators right out of mainstream social media, even on sites like Reddit, for users of their products:

But there are fewer and fewer mainstream sites and services that support porn and adult content, and much of that attitude has grown out of Apple’s strict controls over the App Store and the iOS ecosystem. Steve Jobs famously suggested that “folks who want porn can buy an Android phone,” and Apple has repeatedly leveraged its unprecedented power over millions of smartphones to sanitize the apps that are available on iPhones. Apple does not allow apps “that contain user generated content that is frequently pornographic.” In 2016, Apple famously deleted all third-party Reddit apps that allowed users to toggle NSFW posts on and off; even now, it is impossible to access porn on an iOS Reddit app unless you jump through various hoops.

remember though that this anger isn’t about Being Horny On Main, it’s about sex workers, their platforms and followers, NSFW creators and their art, and adult content communities that are continually being shoved out of spaces they created in recent years:

Tumblr’s leadership seems to believe that the community using Tumblr for adult content is the same as any other porn site—showing a serious disconnect with how its users actually interact and connect on its own platform. “We will leave it to them and focus our efforts on creating the most welcoming environment possible for our community,” he wrote.

The value of Tumblr for NSFW creators and fans was in the autonomy to curate something original, and the freedom to express and share what they’re into—something that can’t be replaced by algorithmically-suggested porn on the rest of the internet.

it was mentioned before somewhere else, but 20% of Tumblr’s traffic is brought in by content they’re now flagging as “adult”

This is yet another example of a platform ignoring adult content when it helps the platform flourish, and then leaving those users out to dry when it’s time to crack down for some monetary gain or face-saving. In addition to being a terrible way to treat your user base, banning adult content on Tumblr will stifle a lot of creativity.

and of course, Apple is also one of the companies that has repeatedly come under fire for censoring lgbtq/queer identities on their sites, the app store, and also caved to russia’s anti-lgbtq policies like a stick of rotten bamboo

The communities that will feel this change the most will be the already-marginalized. “Tumblr banning adult content is a huge loss for the LGBTQ community, especially those with overlapping marginalized identities,” Kitty Stryker, a queer porn performer and consent activist, told Motherboard in an email. “For many, that’s the one place we could find porn that represents us, made by indie performers who created their own content outside of an often racist, transmisogynist, fatphobic industry. Tumblr was where our content could exist without pushing us into the restrictions of a misogynist, male dominated workplace.”
