This is based on a drastic misunderstanding of what Mastodon is. It’s not a social media site like tumblr – it’s open-source code that allows anyone to create a social media site, which can then interact with other sites using that code. To say Mastodon has “lax regulations” is really misleading, because Mastodon itself has no regulations, it only has tools for moderators to regulate their own instances
Mastodon “allows” pedophiles in the same way that email “allows” identity theft scams. No, “email” doesn’t put a stop to identity theft, but “email” is just a set of protocols for sending messages – it’d be absurd to expect it to
Most Mastodon instances (including mastodon.social, the largest and oldest) do more to keep pedophiles off their platform than tumblr ever has, by having strict rules against it, banning any instances that don’t have strict rules against it, and actively moderating to enforce those rules. At that point it’s as if the pedophiles are on a different website entirely – because they literally are on a different domain
As someone who actually uses it, I can confirm that I’ve never had or even heard of a run-in with pedophiles. Admins know the instances that allow it and quickly block and spread the word about any new ones that pop up. Again, it’s been more of an issue for me on tumblr than it’s ever been on masto
Please reblog this. People love spreading this rumor without knowing what they’re talking about, and it’s driving people away from non-corporate, community-controlled, secure open-source social media. And that’s a real big shame
er okay on one hand, yes youre right that mastodon as a software doesnt allow for it anymore than email and so forth. but also yes crypto-pedophilia is still tolerated on some of the more prominent instances of mastodon and minors need to be aware of this before joining, as they should with any other social media.
mastodon does utilize blacklists to do the best of their ability but theres still admins of some instances such as mastodon.social (who lets face it, dont really care) and awoo.space (who has always had shifty regulation on loli/shotacon) tolerating shotacon/lolicon and known offenders like glitchedpuppet and eevee (and oh, look at that tumblr deleted my original/public one!) even though outwardly they say they dont tolerate these things in their rules & tos and so forth.
the good news is that instances (notably snouts.online in the case of glip and eevee) are actively trying to address that and split from the harmful instances. so while yes, mastodon has tools to address these issues, they still frequently get swept under the rug so lets not pretend they dont occur. they absolutely do.
also mastodon is still behind in the sense that it doesnt have a NSFW
filtering system, everything is done through content warnings (which is a
good system dont get me wrong) but users are unable to completely
filter nsfw content- it is still available to them at the click of a
button.
yes mastodon tends to be better in the sense that its not corporate owned, the userbase in general has more involvement/more say, but no its no inherently safer just because its FOSS. please be aware of who your admins are, what they support, and how they respond to these situations if you do join mastodon. do yourself a favour and protect yourself if something seems fishy, utilize reports and dont be afraid to move to a new instance or quit altogether. administrators, as community leaders, should be held responsible for the moderation of their own communities and for the well-being of the fediverse at large.
and to the person im directly responding to, if you havent heard of run-ins with pedophiles then you are either extremely lucky or have a poor definition of pedophilia. i hope its the former.

i just realized tumblr’s ban on porn starts on Saturnalia. of all the possible dates on the calendar, @staff picked the one day the gods ordained for mortals to have a little license to break social norms and behave naughtily. perhaps only Lupercalia would be a more inauspicious date. Saturn will not look favorably on this.
I’d say that I just can’t believe how cartoonishly evil Verizon is, but this is the same company that led the charge on dismantling Net Neutrality. They’re into the kind of war profiteering that would give Reagan’s corpse a hard-on.
